Matter of Balance

Matter of Balance LogoMatter of Balance is a program designed to help older adults reduce their fears about falling and help those who worry about falling increase their activity levels. The Matter of Balance program has received two awards in 2006 which are the Healthcare and Aging Award from the American Society on Aging and the Innovations and Achievements Award from the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

There are four main goals to the class:

  1. Help participants view falls and the fear of falling as controllable.
  2. Set personalized realistic goals for increasing daily activity levels.
  3. Make changes in their environment that will diminish the risk of falling.
  4. Promote exercise to increase strength and balance.

The class is designed to help those older adults who live on their own, who are concerned about falls, or have sustained a fall in the past, reduce their activities due to concerns about falling, those who want to improve flexibility, balance, and strength, and are age 60 and older, ambulatory and able to problem solve.

Each participant works at their own speed and level with help from their instructor. Your instructor will help develop a program tailored to your needs. The classes are casual, one hour, and attended by other older adults. At the beginning of each class there will be a warm up session. You will be using light soft weights, which are provided, during class and will end with a cool down session. For best results, the recommended attendance per week is three times.
